Player Ratings vs Newcastle

Wojciech Szczesny: 6

Didn’t have a chance with any of Newcastle’s goals. Decent saves from Marveaux, Tiote. Unlucky to concede 3.

Bacary Sagna: 5

For the first 30 minutes Bac had Obertan in his pocket until the winger started to test him by drifting inside, with a foul leading to the free kick that Ba converted. Looked uncharacteristically shaky.

Thomas Vermaelen: 6

Still hasn’t found top form, with this evening offering little sign of stability. Ba’s presence up front caused problems, good with the ball at his feet going forward.

Laurent Koscielny: 5.5

Started today with Mertesacker fallen ill, but didn’t grab his chance with both hands. Did ok and won a few important headers. Unfortunately for Koscielny, he is 3rd choice CB at this stage.

Kieran Gibbs: 3

A bad performance from Gibbs today, his biggest problem is Awareness. Did well attacking down the left flank and got an assist for Walcott’s second.

Mikel Arteta: 6.5

Again Mikel went about his business quietly today. Not afraid to track back and do the dirty work. Measured in possession, without ever really providing much of a spark.

Jack Wilshere: 7.5

Didn’t start well when Ba’s free kick deflected in off his head. If he stands up and be brave, Ba doesn’t score. Simple. He was Arsenal’s driving force in the middle of the park manipulating the ball to his desire. Brilliant mazy run and dinked cross in the build-up for Podolski’s goal.

Santi Cazorla: 7

Quiet first half for Santi. After the break he improved drastically and the Santi we all know and love started to orchestrate proceedings with ease using both feet. Anyone know his stronger foot?

Lukas Podolski: 8

Excellent from Ze Fiery German, playing a key part in most of Arsenal’s forward play. He worked tirelessly throughout and tracked back well. An excellent pass set up Walcott for the game’s opener.

Theo Walcott: 9 MOTM.

Did what he does best and that’s play on the shoulder of the last defender and got an excellent hat-trick for his endless running. Classy finish (henry-esque) opened the scoring, before a composed turn under pressure after a fresh air kick from Podolski. His 3rd was a thing of beauty, danced his way past 2, being hacked down in the box, bounced back on his feet and chipped the ball over Krul from a tight angle. Also got an excellent assist for Giroud to nod home. Not the finished article by all means but showing some real promise playing up top. Will he sign?

Oxlade-Chamberlain:7.5

Started well with a rapid counter with him shooting just wide after 70 seconds. Drifted in and out of the game until Santi fed him, good first touch and slotted home with a low drive into the corner. Glad he’s getting a run of games.

Subs:

Aaron Ramsey: 5

Cameo appearance.

Olivier Giroud: 8.5

What an introduction for Giroud. Coming off the bench to lend Arsenal his power and aerial ability. Scored a good header from an excellent Theo cross. His second goal came when he showed a quick set of feet, shifted the ball onto his right foot and powered past Krul. He should of had his 3rd when he flicked the ball towards goal only to be denied by the crossbar.

Francis Coquelin: 5

Cameo appearance, unlucky not to get more game time.
